Trump confirms CNBC contributor Kudlow to be economic aide

first_imgWASHINGTON – President Donald Trump confirmed Thursday that he has picked CNBC contributor Larry Kudlow as his top economic adviser and said the country is in line for a long run of upbeat financial news. The United States “will have many years of Great Economic & Financial Success, with low taxes, unparalleled innovation, fair trade and an ever expanding labour force leading the way!” the president tweeted.Kudlow is succeeding Gary Cohn, a former Goldman Sachs executive, at the White House. Cohn is leaving after a dispute over Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.Kudlow served in the Reagan administration and has emerged as a leading proponent of tax cuts and a smaller government.Kudlow told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he has accepted the offer and said the U.S. economy was poised to take off after Trump signed $1.5 trillion worth of tax cuts into law.“The economy is starting to roar and we’re going to get more of that,” he said.Kudlow will join an administration in the middle of a tumultuous overhaul, with a number of White House staffers and top officials departing in recent weeks. Trump on Tuesday dumped his secretary of state, Rex Tillerson.Trump seems increasingly determined to tax foreign imports, a policy that Kudlow personally opposes. Kudlow said he is “in accord” with Trump’s agenda and that his team at the White House would help put in place policies set by the president.Trump has promised to reduce the trade imbalance with China and rewrite the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico. Kudlow declined to say what advice he would give the president on trade issues, saying instead that Trump is “a very good negotiator.”Kudlow, 70, has informally advised the Trump administration in the past and he has spoken with the president “at some length in recent days,” so he is ready “to hit the ground running.”Kudlow told CNBC on Wednesday that he was going to Washington on Thursday to meet with Trump. White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the administration “will keep everyone posted” on when Kudlow officially assumes the job.last_img read more

Is Deshaun Watson Better Than Lamar Jackson Depends On What Skills You

Clemson Tigers quarterback Deshaun Watson stirred up some mild controversy last week when he declared that he — not Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, who won this year’s Heisman Trophy — was the best player in all of college football.“I’m the best player in the country,” Watson told reporters on Dec. 19. “That’s how I think. That’s how I feel. You know, people have their own way of voting.”Although Watson won his second straight Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s most outstanding QB this season, he ended up second behind Jackson in the Heisman voting. And the O’Brien-Heisman split — “best quarterback” vs. “best player” — is pretty much the heart of Watson’s rivalry with Jackson. In the traditional sense of the QB role, Watson was probably a better pure passer than Jackson this season. Watson threw for 524 more yards, had a higher passing efficiency rating (according to the NCAA’s formula) and contributed many more expected points added (EPA) in the air than Jackson did. More to the point, Watson had a vastly superior completion percentage (68 percent to 58 percent), threw fewer of his passes off-target (11 percent vs. 15 percent), and was notably better in the short-to-intermediate passing game. He beat Jackson in Total QBR (81.2 to 76.9) on passes that traveled 15 or fewer yards through the air — plays that accounted for about three-quarters of each QB’s total attempts — and a higher percentage of Watson’s passing yards also came after his receivers caught the ball, a healthy indicator in the type of quick-passing game Clemson employs. As a result of all that controlled passing, Clemson’s aerial attack was more efficient than Louisville’s this year. The Tigers ranked fifth among Power Five conference teams in passing EPA, piling up about 40 percent more expected points per game via the pass than the 12th-ranked Cardinals.Still, Jackson made up the difference as an all-around QB. He generated nearly 70 more yards of total offense per game than Watson, thanks in large part to his mobility — Jackson rushed for an incredible 1,538 yards, the most of any Heisman-winning quarterback ever (as well as the second-most by a 3,000-yard passer).1That is, since at least 2000, which is as far back as Sports-Reference.com’s Play Index can search — but also probably even earlier, since I couldn’t find a season in their earlier data that even came close to matching Jackson’s 2016 output. Watson’s no slouch as a runner — he gained 524 yards on the ground, which ranked 15th among qualified FBS QBs — but Jackson probably had the best dual-threat season in college history. When we factor in Jackson’s huge workload in the running game, he had a slightly better Total QBR than Watson on the season, and he generated about 31 percent more total EPA per game than Watson did.Jackson even had Watson beat in a couple of important passing categories. First, Jackson threw 24 percent fewer interceptions per attempt than Watson did. (Despite his accuracy, Watson has had a problem with picks all year — though his overall game is still so good that it’s hard to say even the picks are a real problem.) And although Watson had the superior overall passing numbers, Jackson had a better year throwing the ball deep. Not only did he do it more — 14 percent of Jackson’s throws traveled at least 25 yards in the air, versus 9 percent for Watson — but he also had a better QBR (77.8 to 71.1) on those long tosses. Watson was more surgical in his deep strikes, with a sterling 8-0 TD-INT ratio on throws of 25 or more yards (Jackson’s mark was a more pedestrian 9-6), but he also spent a significant amount of his time setting up bubble screens with passes at or behind the line of scrimmage. Twenty-seven percent of Watson’s passes were for zero or fewer air yards, compared with 17 percent for Jackson. All told, many of the differences between Jackson and Watson simply come down to the trade-offs a QB makes playing in different offenses. While both teams call their share of zone-read plays, Louisville’s offense asks Jackson to keep the ball and run with it more than Clemson’s does of Watson. (There’s also a school of thought that says this was by design, and that Watson will be unleashed as a runner in the College Football Playoff, so stay tuned.) The Cardinals are a more run-oriented team than the Tigers anyway, and that allows them to exploit defenses for more big plays down the field when Jackson does throw. Clemson, meanwhile, is more set up to control the field through short passing and the selective use of Watson’s running and deep-throwing skills. The big takeaway, then, is that although the two quarterbacks played pretty different styles this season, they both arrived at a similar place in terms of overall production. So the question of who is the nation’s true best player might just boil down to preference: Do you like running QBs who throw a bunch of deep bombs, or do you prefer more pocket-oriented accurate passers who can also run when necessary? If I were starting a team, I’d flip a coin. read more

After CCOs Exit SpiceJet CEO Neil Mills Resigns

first_imgA couple of months after the exit of SpiceJet chief commercial officer CCO Harish Moideen Kutty, the airline’s chief executive officer Niel Mills has resigned, according to reports.Mills put in his papers before the expiry of his contract, which ends in 2015. He was said to have taken the decision last week while on a visit to Chennai to meet Kalanithi Maran, promoter of SpiceJet’s parent company Sun Group. However, no formal announcement has been made about his resignation.  “Mills is a serious professional. He wasn’t too happy here and resigned some days ago. He is still coming to office regularly, is fully involved in running the airline and will continue to do so till he is relieved,” Times of India quoted a source as saying.A spokeswoman of the airline refuted the reports of Mills’ resignation saying, “It is still a rumour. We do not comment on market rumours or speculation.”Mills put in his papers just two weeks ahead of the board’s move to finalise the airline’s earning reports for the June quarter. His abrupt resignation comes soon after the airline faced a heavy loss of ₹186 crore in the March quarter. The low-cost carrier reported losses of ₹606 crore and ₹191 crore for 2011-12 and 2012-13, respectively.According to reports, Mills may have quit the company due to the airline’s poor performance and differences between its promoters and board member Natrajhen, whose appointement to the post of managing direction in September topped Mills’ own position. But sources asserted that Mills’ exit has nothing to do with Natrajhen’s promotion and the airline’s performance as the entire aviation industry was going through a tough time.Mills was an integral part of SpiceJet after he was appointed directly by Sun Group MD Kalanithi Maran in 2010 after the latter bought a majority stake in the airline from London-based businessman Bhulo Kansagra. He replaced Sanjay Aggarwal, who left the company to join the debt-ridden and stranded Kingfisher Airlines. Before SpiceJet, Mills was working with FlyDubai. His tenure in SpiceJet brought won him several accolades and profit to the company. However, he faced backlash from the aviation regulatory for the fire sale of 10 lakh tickets which was announced in January this year and was eventually blamed by aviation analysts for the airline’s losses.last_img read more

Kashmir journos frustrated by communications blockade

first_imgIndian security forces personnel patrol a deserted street during restrictions after the government scrapped special status for Kashmir, in Srinagar 9 August, 2019. Photo: ReutersKashmir has nearly 180 English and Urdu daily newspapers, but only five are publishing these days due to restrictions imposed by Indian authorities to prevent unrest after New Delhi revoked the state’s autonomy. That is frustrating for the region’s journalists, many of whom are veterans of covering a long insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir and operating under prolonged curfews.”This is the biggest story of our generation and we haven’t been able to report it,” said Faisul Yaseen, associate editor of Rising Kashmir, one of the handful of newspaper groups that is still publishing. With phone lines and internet services suspended, six newspaper editors and journalists told Reuters they have no way to access wire reports or any outside online news sources, their district correspondents, and seek comment from government officials.Only five newspapers out of 174 dailies are now publishing, according to newspaper distributor Mansoor Ahmed, and they are being distributed within a 5-km radius of Lambert Lane, the main newspaper hub of the region, because of severe restrictions on movement, he said.Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government imposed the blackout after it stripped Kashmir of its special status this week and broke up the state into two federal territories aiming to fully integrate the Muslim majority region.Officials said restrictions will slowly be lifted. The big concern is there could be large scale demonstrations against the decision to withdraw Kashmir’s special rights to frame its own laws and lifting of a ban on people from outside the region buying property. An Indian foreign ministry spokesman said there was no restriction on the press.”Nobody has been prohibited or stopped from publishing anything. Now, because of logistical constraints if they are not able to publish it is a different matter,” the spokesman said.Usually a 12-page edition, the Rising Kashmir English daily is now only bringing out four pages, much of it sourced from a few national TV news channels and four reporters who have living and working from Rising Kashmir’s office. The final layout of the paper is hand-delivered to the press on the outskirts of the city in the evening when movement restrictions in some parts are slightly relaxed. Two other Rising Kashmir newspapers – one in Urdu, another in Kashmiri – that the group publishes are suspended.Within Srinagar, reporters and photographers are finding it difficult to work without any passes to go through security checkpoints.Editors of two Urdu newspapers in Srinagar said they had ceased publication because of a lack of news sources, movement restrictions, and staff being unable to reach the newsroom.”Even in the worst of times, the press were given curfew passes,” said Morifat Qadri, executive editor of the Daily Afaaq, which usually prints 4,000 copies daily.”They don’t want that anybody covers the current situation,” he said.last_img read more

Here Are 7 Times Texas officials Have Fought Over Christmas

first_imgIllustration by Callie Richmond / CBSKen Paxton has come to the defense of a Christmas-themed Peanuts poster. But this isn’t the first time a Texas official has fought over Christmas. When a principal at a Killeen middle school ordered a staffer to remove a Christmas-themed cartoon poster last week, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton quickly came to the poster’s defense. He said the decision to take down the Peanuts-themed image, which quoted Linus from “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” was an “attack on religious liberty.”It’s become something of a holiday tradition: Year after year, Texas officials wage battles in the so-called “War on Christmas.” Here’s a sampling:   Greg Abbott — then the attorney general — went to bat for Christmas in 2011 in Athens, Texas, where a Wisconsin-based atheist group was working to remove a nativity scene outside of the Henderson County Courthouse. “Our office has a history of defending religious displays in this state,” Abbott told a local Fox News affiliate. “Our message to the atheists is, ‘Don’t mess with Texas and our nativity scenes or the Ten Commandments.’”It was Christmas in June. After the 83rd Legislative Session in 2013, then-Gov. Rick Perry signed legislation nicknamed “The Merry Christmas Bill” clarifying that school districts were allowed to put up decorations such as nativity scenes and Christmas trees on school property. Most importantly: Teachers and students were allowed to say, “Merry Christmas.” At the bill’s signing, Perry said, “Religious freedom does not mean freedom from religion.” Shortly before Thanksgiving in 2013, an email from the Frisco ISD PTA issued “Winter Party Rules” that banned Christmas trees, references to Christmas or other religious holidays, the colors red or green, and food or drink that could stain the carpet. State Rep. Pat Fallon, R-Frisco, reached out to the school district to point out that the “Merry Christmas Bill” allowed all of those things (minus the carpet stains). “Please note that such restrictions are unnecessary, inappropriate, and quite frankly draconian in nature,” Fallon wrote. In December 2014, the Texas Nativity Scene Project unveiled a nativity scene at the Texas Capitol to combat the “War on Christmas.” The scene was made by a private group but supported by both the State Preservation Board and Abbott’s office. In December 2015, Abbott and Paxton went to bat for Orange County, where officials had removed a nativity scene after a local atheist group requested permission to display a “Happy Holidays” sign next to it. Abbott and Paxton urged them to consider putting it back up. “I strongly encourage the city of Orange to stand up to the demands of a select few who wish to see God thrown out of the public square, embrace the season of Christmas and restore the Nativity Scene immediately,” Abbott said in a statement at the time. Just three days before Christmas in 2015, Abbott asked the State Preservation Board to remove a “winter solstice” display from the Texas Capitol. The display, put on by the Freedom From Religion Foundation, urged the separation of church and state. Abbott called it a “juvenile parody.” It was taken down. This article originally appeared in The Texas Tribune at https://www.texastribune.org/2016/12/14/heres-every-time-texas-has-fought-over-christmas/. A Reflection on Veterans Day from a Beloved AFRO Veteran

first_imgBy Edgar Brookins, AFRO General Manager, D.C.With over two decades of service to the country and to the AFRO, Army veteran, Edgar Brookins reflects on Veterans Day and why its celebrated in the United States.Sunday is Veterans Day and throughout the commemorative weekend there will be speeches, parades, specials and ceremonial services all across the United States and beyond. As a twenty-one year Army Vietnam Era veteran, I reflect back on when this special day got etched in the history of our Nation.Edgar Brookins as a young private when he first enlisted in the Army in 1969.A phrase that has become the definition of how Americans express their humble thanks to the members of the Armed Forces is, “thank you for your service.” Those words will be uttered numerous times. So with nearly 20 million veterans on the rolls, why a single holiday to honor our veterans?Historically, in November 1919, one year after the Armistice that ended World War I went into effect, President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11 as the commemoration of Armistice Day.In 1938, Congress approved a bill that made Nov. 11 an annual legal holiday known as “Armistice Day” that honored the cause of world peace however it was used primarily to pay gratitude and honor World War I Veterans. In 1954, after World War II, the law was amended; the word Armistice was changed to Veterans and Nov. 11 became a day to honor Veterans of all American wars.Veterans Day continues to be observed in all Federal Agencies and local communities and is overwhelmingly supported by all major veterans’ service organizations like the VFW, the American Legion and the National Association of Black Veterans. So Veterans Day serves as a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the our beloved nation.Veterans Day 2018-we honor all those who served…the defenders of freedom-HOOAH!last_img read more

Carbon emissions from peatswamp forest clearing quantified

first_imgSatellite image of the island of Borneo on August 19, 2002, showing smoke from burning peat swamp forests. Image: Jacques Descloitres, MODIS Land Rapid Response Team, NASA/GSFC Malaysian peatswamps obliterated for palm oil: study Explore further Peat-swamp forests contain huge amounts of stored carbon both in the biomass above the ground in composting organic matter slowly breaking down in the soils, and much of this is released in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane when the forests are cleared and the swamps are drained. The new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) used satellite images with 250 meter resolution to produce maps of the closed canopy plantations in Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo and Sumatra. They found the oil-palm plantations covered an area of 2 million hectares in Peninsular Malaysia, 2.4 million in Borneo, and 3.9 million in Sumatra. These figures do not include the smaller open canopy plantations, which are difficult to identify from the images, or plantations planted after 2002.The study showed that around 880,000 hectares of peatlands (around six percent) had been converted to oil-palm plantations by the early 2000s. The researchers also looked at the effects of clearing the forests in the region on wildlife, and found that 12.1 percent of species face probable extinction in Peninsular Malaysia (equivalent to 46 species of forest birds), 3.4 percent in Sumatra and 1 percent in Borneo. Among the species at risk are orang-utans, pygmy elephants and Sumatran tigers and rhinos. The researchers calculated that clearing the peatlands released around 140 million tonnes of carbon from above-ground biomass and 4.6 million from oxidation of peat in the ground. Clearing also reduces the carbon sequestration previously provided by the forest..Dr Koh said by 2010 around 2.3 million hectares of peat-swamp forests had been cleared that are currently degraded land and not yet developed as plantations. He said if the clearings were planted with palm for oil species losses could be exacerbated by as much as 12 percent, while if they were re-forested biodiversity would be enhanced by up to 20 percent. The study recommended the remaining peat-swamp forests in Southeast Asia should be conserved to protect biodiversity and safeguard carbon stocks, with most effort being concentrated in Central and West Kalimantan, Sarawak and Riau in Indonesia, which hold 75 percent of the remaining forests, or around 3.9 million hectares, and much of the cleared but not yet developed peat-swamp forest.Indonesia is accelerating its production of palm oil and is planning to double its production by 2020. Palm oil is used to make biodiesel and is also used in soaps, cosmetics and in many processed foods. It can also be used as a fuel for cooking. More information: Remotely sensed evidence of tropical peatland conversion to oil palm, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Published online before print March 7, 2011, doi:10.1073/pnas.1018776108 (PhysOrg.com) — Peat-swamp forests in Southeast Asia are being cleared to make way for food production and for oil-palm plantations for biofuel, but now a new study has quantified the resultant carbon emissions for the first time. © 2010 PhysOrg.com Citation: Carbon emissions from peat-swamp forest clearing quantified (2011, March 8) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2011-03-carbon-emissions-peat-swamp-forest-quantified.html This document is subject to copyright. Take back damaged medicines Directorate of Drugs Control

first_imgKolkata: The Directorate of Drugs Control (DDC) in the state on Wednesday issued a notification asking the manufacturers and wholesalers to take back the medicines stored in various shops at Bagree Market as they might have been damaged due to the excessive heat generated during the fire. The step has been taken as a precautionary measure to check the medicines from being sold in the markets. The DDC apprehends that the quality of these medicines might be reduced and compromised due to the raging blaze. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeThe DDC has urged the medicine sellers, both retail and wholesale, to stop selling the affected drugs and also the biological products. It was stated that many of the drugs that were kept inside Bagree Market need to be refrigerated. As there had been power cuts in the building since the incident took place, the medicines might have been damaged. If these medicines are circulated in the market, it might adversely affect the people.A senior official of the DDC said the temperature in the building had gone up as a result of which the quality of the medicines would be hampered. Hence all the manufacturing houses have been asked to withdraw the stock or stop operations. Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Mercedes car in Kolkata, 2 pedestrians killedThese medicines cannot be sold until the authorities ensure that the quality of the medicines remain intact. The DDC also assured that stern action will be taken against those who will be found violating the instructions. An official of the DDC said that as they are short-staffed, it is not always possible for them to conduct raids at various places. Hence the body is trying to check the spread of the drugs which were recovered by some of the businessmen there. It may be mentioned that there was a wholesale market of medicines within Bagree Market that used to supply medicines in different places. It had the wholesale market of various important drugs including those of cancer and people used to obtain such medicines at much cheaper rates. It was learnt that around 25 wholesale shops were there in the market many of which have been damaged. The extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained as all the electronic gadgets that maintained the records have been gutted. Bengal Chemist and Druggist Association added that the devastating fire that took place at Bagree Market on Sunday will have no major impact on the supply of medicines in the state.last_img read more

Microsoft opensources Project Zipline its data compression algorithm and hardware for the

first_imgMicrosoft announced that it is open-sourcing its new cutting-edge compression technology, called Project Zipline, yesterday. As a part of this open-source release, Project Zipline compression algorithms, hardware design specifications, and Verilog source code for register transfer language (RTL) has been made available. Apart from the announcement of Project Zipline, the Open Compute Project (OCP) Global Summit 2019 also started yesterday in San Jose. In the summit, the latest innovations that can make hardware more efficient, flexible, and scalable are shared. Microsoft states that its journey with OCP began in 2014 when it joined the foundation and contributed the server and data center designs that power its global Azure Cloud. Moreover, Microsoft contributes innovations to OCP every year at the summit. Microsoft has again decided to contribute Project Zipline this year. “This contribution will provide collateral for integration into a variety of silicon components across the industry for this new high-performance compression standard. Contributing RTL at this level of detail as open source to OCP is industry leading”, states Microsoft team. Project Zipline is aimed to optimize the hardware implementation for different types of data on cloud storage workloads. Microsoft has been able to achieve higher compression ratios, higher throughput, and lower latency than the other algorithms currently available. This allows for compression without compromise as well as data processing for different industry usage models (from cloud to edge). Microsoft’s Project Zipline compression algorithm produces great results with up to 2X high compression ratios as compared to the commonly used Zlib-L4 64KB model. These enhancements, in turn, produce direct customer benefits for cost savings and allow access to petabytes or exabytes of capacity in a cost-effective way for the customers. Project Zipline has also been optimized for a large variety of datasets, and Microsoft’s release of RTL allows hardware vendors to use the reference design that offers the highest compression, lowest cost, and lowest power in an algorithm. Project Zipline is available to the OCP ecosystem, so vendors can contribute further to benefit Azure and other customers. Microsoft team states that this contribution towards open source will set a “new precedent for driving frictionless collaboration in the OCP ecosystem for new technologies and opening the doors for hardware innovation at the silicon level”. The UK government is due to examine the developmen

first_imgThe UK government is due to examine the development of immersive technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, looking at the impact these could have on sport, entertainment and news. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) committee has launched an inquiry that will look at growth areas like immersive media, VR and AR and eSports. It will also consider how the addictive nature of some technologies can affect users’ engagement with gaming and social media, particularly among younger people.“The way we interact with cutting-edge technologies is life-changing for our generation and generations to come,” said Damian Collins, chair of the DCMS Committee.“We have the opportunity now to shape that development, setting an agenda that benefits our economy and how we spend our leisure time, while ensuring the right safeguards are built in.”The Immersive and Addictive Technologies inquiry will examine government efforts to deliver policy, infrastructure and regulation around immersive technologies and look at the increasing digitisation and ‘gamification’ of people’s lives. The government will investigate what action is needed for the UK to remain a key player in the eSports and gaming space, but also consider the potentially addictive nature of social media and gaming and the impact of spending increasing amounts of time in online worlds.“Technology such as virtual reality and augmented reality is already an important asset to the film industry, simulated training, and gaming,” said Collins. “We want to understand more about its potential and the future impact it could have on society.”Collins and the DCMS Committee is involved in a separate investigation into ‘Disinformation and ‘fake news’’.Launched last year, this inquiry made headlines recently after it published a cache of secret Facebook documents obtained from app maker Six4Three, prompting this response from the social media giant. The DCMS committee invites evidence on immersive technologies from the public, organisations and others with relevant expertise, by Monday 14 January 2019. For more information click here.last_img read more

If theres one thing were grateful for on Shots

first_imgIf there’s one thing we’re grateful for on Shots, it’s our passionate, engaged audience. Our stories often prompt a lively response from readers and people who hear us on the radio. This was definitely the case with Monday’s look at the use of permethrin-treated clothing to prevent tick bites, which can cause a lot of nasty diseases.Permethrin is a synthetic pesticide that’s similar to natural compounds found in chrysanthemums. When you spray permethrin on your clothes, a study published in May found, it incapacitates ticks quickly, rendering them unable to bite.It didn’t take long for emails to come flooding in. Most were from concerned cat owners.”Permethrin is very toxic to cats,” wrote Charles Fischer, who lives in Chapel Hill, N.C. “Suggesting that people spray their garments with permethrin to prevent tick bites without a cat disclaimer is very dangerous.”Others agreed. “NPR has always been a wonderful source of great information,” wrote Colleen Scott-Jackson of Jacksonville, N.C. “I would hate to see any cats harmed because an important piece of information is left out of the story.”We certainly didn’t want any cat catastrophes, so we decided to look into this a little further. Here’s what we found.Cats are more sensitive to permethrin than other mammals, but cat lovers can still use the insecticide as long they’re careful about it, veterinarians say.”It’s the dose that makes the poison,” says Dr. Charlotte Means, director of toxicology at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. The biggest problem for cats is when they are exposed to highly concentrated permethrin products meant for use in dogs, she says. These products may be 45 percent permethrin or higher. “Some cats will be so sensitive that even just casual contact with a dog that’s been treated will be enough to cause clinical signs, including tremors, seizures and in the worst-case scenario — death,” she says. But the concentration of permethrin in household sprays is much, much lower – typically less than 1 percent. And with concentrations of 5 percent or less, Means says, there are rarely problems.”Of course you can always get an individual [cat] who is more sensitive, but for most animals there are going to be minimal clinical signs,” she says. There are some simple rules that can help minimize the risk.”Don’t put the dog product on the cat,” says Dr. Lisa Murphy, associate professor of toxicology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. She agrees that the most dangerous scenario for cats is an accidental exposure to a highly concentrated product meant for dogs. “Cats seem to be deficient in one of the primary mechanisms for metabolizing permethrin,” she says, which is why they are more susceptible to the chemical. If an animal “isn’t able to normally metabolize it, break it down and excrete it, it can build up and be more likely to cause problems.”If you’re concerned your cat may have been exposed to permethrin, the most common symptoms are skin irritations — redness, itching and other signs of discomfort. “The animal may be frantic if they have something uncomfortable on their skin,” Murphy says. “They may be scratching, digging and rolling because it’s uncomfortable.”These skin reactions are usually easily treated by washing the affected area with mild, liquid dishwashing detergent. If the cat fights back, you can take it to the vet for a bath.Other reactions to watch for are drooling or pawing at the mouth. “Cats seem particularly sensitive to bad tastes in their mouths,” Murphy says. This can be helped by gently rinsing out the mouth, or offering the cat some water or milk to take away the bad taste. But if you see signs of neurological problems — tremors, twitching or shaking — it’s time to take the cat to the vet right away.Even then, if there aren’t any complications, “the prognosis for a full recovery is excellent,” Murphy says.”The way I look at it, as a veterinarian, is it’s all about making choices,” Murphy says. Ticks, fleas, lice and mosquitoes do carry lots of diseases that permethrin and other insecticides can help prevent, she says: “All sorts of things that we wouldn’t wish on ourselves or our pets.”So the bottom line when it comes to permethrin and tick-bite prevention is: If you have a cat, be extra careful. If you’re spraying your clothes, do it somewhere the cat doesn’t have access to. And let the clothes dry thoroughly before you and your cat reunite.”If you are spraying a 1 percent concentration on clothing and it dries, it’s unlikely that you’ll see any problems with the cat,” Means says. To be extra cautious, don’t leave permethrin-treated clothing near where your cat sleeps. And make sure to change clothes after you wear them outside, so the cat can jump in your lap without you having to worry, she says. And it may seem obvious, but if you’re using a permethrin soak for your clothes, make sure the cat doesn’t drink from the bucket. Finally, read the label for the permethrin product you’re using. Check the concentration and use only as instructed. And before treating any animal directly with any insecticide, check with your vet first. Copyright 2018 NPR. Gmail Increases File Attachment Size Limit to 50MB

first_img Matthew Humphries Gmail Free Webinar | July 31: Secrets to Running a Successful Family Business It’s not uncommon to download files that are multiple gigabytes in size, but when it comes to emails, attachments are still very limited. That’s no bad thing, because nobody wants their email client sat there downloading huge files. However, sometimes you need to send a large file, and Google is responding to that need by increasing the file size limit for Gmail.Gmail users can now receive files of up to 50MB in size. However, attaching a file directly in Gmail is still limited to 25MB. That shouldn’t be a problem as Google offers to store larger files on Google Drive and send a link in the email instead. This is how most large files should be sent via email. Relying on a file storage and download service means emails stay small and users can choose when it’s convenient to download attachments.Google revealed the size increase yeterday and should have it rolled out to all Gmail accounts before the end of the week. What you may not be aware of is the fact Google actually limits how many emails a user can receive every day “to keep our systems healthy and your accounts safe.”Each account can receive a maximum of 86,400 emails in one day. That limit is further broken down to a limit of 3,600 emails per hour and 60 per minute. If you hit one of the limits then no further email can be received for the next 24 hours and any that get sent “are bounced or deferred back to the sender.” This story originally appeared on PCMag Add to Queue Next Article Senior Editor 2 min readcenter_img March 2, 2017 –shares Register Now » Learn how to successfully navigate family business dynamics and build businesses that excel. Study Consuming sugar does not improve mood and makes people more tired

first_img sugar consumption has virtually no effect on mood, regardless of how much sugar is consumed or whether people engage in demanding activities after taking it. people who consumed sugar felt more tired and less alert than those who had not. the idea of a ‘sugar rush’ is a myth without any truth behind it. Reviewed by James Ives, M.Psych. (Editor)Apr 5 2019Sugar does not improve mood and it can make people less alert and more tired after its consumption – according to a new study by the University of Warwick, Humboldt University of Berlin, and Lancaster University. The research team set out to examine the myth of the ‘sugar rush’: can sugar really put you in a better mood? Using data collected from 31 published studies involving almost 1300 adults, Dr Konstantinos Mantantzis at Humboldt University of Berlin, Dr Sandra Sünram-Lea at Lancaster University, and Dr Friederike Schlaghecken and Professor Elizabeth Maylor in the University of Warwick’s Department of Psychology investigated the effect of sugar on various aspects of mood, including anger, alertness, depression, and fatigue.Related StoriesScientists develop universal FACS-based approach to heterogenous cell sorting, propelling organoid researchSchwann cells capable of generating protective myelin over nerves finds researchOne pint of beer or large glass of wine can compromise person’s sense of agencyThey also considered how factors such as the quantity and type of sugar consumed might affect mood, and whether engaging in demanding mental and physical activities made any difference. The researchers found that : Professor Elizabeth Maylor, from the University of Warwick, commented:”We hope that our findings will go a long way to dispel the myth of the ‘sugar rush’ and inform public health policies to decrease sugar consumption.”Dr Konstantinos Mantantzis, from Humboldt University of Berlin, who led the study, said:”The idea that sugar can improve mood has been widely influential in popular culture, so much so that people all over the world consume sugary drinks to become more alert or combat fatigue.”Our findings very clearly indicate that such claims are not substantiated – if anything, sugar will probably make you feel worse.”Dr Sandra Sünram-Lea added:”The rise in obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome in recent years highlights the need for evidence-based dietary strategies to promote healthy lifestyle across the lifespan. Our findings indicate that sugary drinks or snacks do not provide a quick ‘fuel refill’ to make us feel more alert.”center_img Source:https://warwick.ac.uk/newsandevents/pressreleases/no_such_thinglast_img read more
